Milwaukee, WI (PRWEB) May 7, 2009 -- A Milwaukee woman who ordinarily reviews products such as wine, Web sites, music and art on her blog, has launched a simple but clever nationwide project to raise money for non-profits by dedicating every 100th blog to charity and encouraging others bloggers to do the same.
Jennifer Stinnett, who blogs at Jennifer's Review Blog, developed the idea as a way to mark the first anniversary of blogging on May 1. "I was coming up on the 100th post, so I thought that it would be a cool way to celebrate the anniversary while also promoting charities," says Stinnett, who manages the blog part-time while holding down a full-time job.
Stinnett had a custom logo designed of a red heart cupped in two open hands that includes the words "Donate Your 100th Post to Charity." The logo appears on her blog, and she encourages other bloggers to download the copyright-free logo to use as a widget on their own sites to promote their involvement.
She also has started a Facebook page to promote the project. Stinnett will publicize participants and report the amount of money they raise for charity on her blog and on the Facebook profile.
For her 100th post, Stinnett collected a jar of loose change from her house and uploaded a photo of it onto her blog. There her readers can guess the amount of change in the jar, which holds about five cups of coins, she says. The reader whose guess is closest to the total value will win the honor of having the change donated in their name to the National Domestic Violence Hotline, a favorite cause of hers.
Stinnett suggests that other bloggers choose their own method of raising money for their favorite charities. Her idea was sparked by the first Web site she reviewed on her blog, Change makes Change, which advocates donating spare change to charity. The site reports that there is an estimated $30 in spare change lying around the average American household, which, if donated to charity, would raise $2.25 billion.
"This just shows that we can make a huge impact if everyone does a little bit," Stinnett says. "I wanted to mark this milepost by giving to someone else. I hope that others in 'blogland' will also see this as a terrific way to give back."
