New Loan Modification Industry Group focuses on Ethical Treatment of Customers

The National Loan Modification Association of America is focused on drawing members who commit to a code of ethics when dealing with consumers.

New City, NY (PRWEB) February 24, 2009 -- A new organization focused on helping the emerging loan modification industry to police itself was officially launched today. "By becoming a member of the NLMAA, loan modification professionals agree to abide by a code of ethics that promises fair, professional and honest treatment of the people that come to them for help," said James Troia, one of the organizations founders. "Like it or not, a cottage industry has emerged in this country that is focused on assisting consumers modify the terms of their mortgage in return for a service fee. Until more regulations are in place, we feel that consumers should know which of these loan modification companies have stepped up to the plate and said 'Yes, I am a professional who operates within a code of ethics.'"

The for-profit Loan Modification business has gained momentum in recent months due to the nationwide recession and slumping housing prices. Loan modifications are one tool that is employed to help consumers avoid foreclosure. A loan modification occurs when a lender or servicer of a mortgage agrees to modify the terms of the mortgage without writing a new mortgage. Loan modifications can reduce principal balances, reduce interest rates or change the term of the loan. "There are millions of people who are both eligible and can benefit from a loan modification but many don't know where to begin. Often times, a professional consultation can help people understand their options and may be fastest way to get results," Troia said.

The group's website located at NLMAA.org promotes membership among industry professionals and provides some insight into the loan modification process for consumers. "Much in the way different seals and credentials provide confidence to shoppers across the world wide web, the NLMAA member logo helps to increase the level of comfort a consumer has when seeking assistance in modifying their loan. It's not a be-all-end-all, but it should be a guidepost during the selection process."

About the NLMAA:
