New Webinar Explores Consumer Perspective on Health IT and Participatory Medicine in Patient Centered Medical Home Model - June 23, 2009
Health2 Resources Webinar features Susan Edgman-Levitan, PA, proponent of patient- and family-centered care, and David Nace, MD co-chair of Patient-Centered Primary Care Collaborative’s Center for eHealth Information Adoption and Exchange
Washington, D.C. (PRWEB) June 17, 2009 -- Six in ten American adults go online for health information, and social networking sites are drawing millions of Americans to conversations about health with their online peers. The intersection of health information technology (health IT) and the role of consumers in participatory medicine will be at the center of a new Webinar slated for June 23, 2009, sponsored by Health2 Resources and educationally co-sponsored by the Patient-Centered Primary Care Collaborative.
The Webinar will feature two national experts on the topics of consumerism in health care and health IT within the patient centered medical home model. Susan Edgman-Levitan, PA, is executive director of the John D. Stoeckle Center for Primary Care Innovation at Massachusetts General Hospital, and founding President of the Picker Institute. David Nace, MD, is vice president, clinical development of McKesson Health Solutions, and co-chair of the PCPCC's Center for eHealth Information Adoption and Exchange (CeHIA). Nace recently oversaw the work of an expert group from the CeHIA that defined five key health information technology (health IT) capabilities that align directly with the principles of the patient centered medical home.
According to the Pew Internet and American Life Project, 42 percent of all adults report that they or someone they know has been helped by following medical advice or health information found on the Internet, a significant increase over the 25 percent of adults who said so in 2006.
“The patient centered medical home model promotes enhanced access to providers, and the Internet offers great promise for patients to schedule their own appointments, access their own records and communicate via secure email,” Edgman-Levitan said. “Health IT needs to be meaningful and useful for coordinating patient care, and also should open new avenues for patients to become more actively involved in their own care.”
The Obama administration has allocated $19 billion to fund the “meaningful use” of electronic medical records. Ensuring that these systems will be relevant for care coordination and integration, and that systems engage providers, patients and caregivers synergistically, is a top priority. The Webinar is an interactive opportunity to examine the issue for health care CEOs, physician practice leaders, IT officers, medical directors, health plans, hospital leaders, business development and strategic planning directors.
The Webinar is set for June 23, 2009 from 2 to 3:15 p.m. EST. For more information or to register, go to: http://archive.constantcontact.com/fs067/1101292888704/archive/1102602408017.html
