Antioch New England’s MBA in Organizational and Environmental Sustainability (Green MBA), immerses students in an extraordinarily collaborative learning environment that focuses on sustainable business practices.

Keene, N.H. – Antioch University New England has awarded its first Green MBA’s to the initial graduating class of an innovative new program to produce business leaders for a rapidly changing global economy.

Every candidate accepted into the program’s inaugural cohort successfully completed requirements to earn the new degree—the MBA in Organizational and Environmental Sustainability.

Polly Chandler, who chairs the graduate school’s Department of Organization and Management, also manages the Green MBA program.

“These are the champions of sustainability who are now going out into a variety of fields,” she said of the new graduates. “We’re so proud of their achievements and excited for their futures.”

The university, which was one of the first schools in the country to offer a Green MBA, launched the program two years ago. The interdisciplinary, progressive curriculum combines traditional MBA finance and management studies with training in leadership, collaboration, systems thinking and the environment. The goal is to educate leaders for sustainable business who are committed to a triple bottom line: sound profits with social and environmental responsibility.

Nineteen students are first recipients of the university’s new degree. They range in age from early twenties to mid-fifties, originate from all parts of the country and represent diverse walks of life. Among them are a corporate CFO, a former software engineer, a college professor, an employee of Toyota Automobile Corporation, and a couple of farmers.

Each now plans to turn a profit while changing the world. Future career paths include: green information technology, water impact studies, alternative energy, and commercial composting, among others.

“It’s not business as usual,” said Chandler. “These are people of great intelligence, huge hearts and a passion for what they do. They know it’s not going to be easy, but they’re ready, willing and able.”

The field of sustainability studies is rapidly growing. Antioch New England University’s program ranks in the top five in multiple categories in Business As Unusual: The 2008 Student Guide to Graduate Business Programs, published by Net Impact, a San Francisco-based, national nonprofit organization.

More about Antioch New England's Green MBA
Students of Antioch New England's Green MBA programs learn what most will expect in an MBA program, plus the unexpected. The ANE Green MBA curriculum considers not only sustainable business practices, economics, and finance, but also the natural environment, leadership, systems thinking, and collaboration. The programs prepare graduates for a variety of roles in for-profit, not-for-profit, public-sector organizations, and their own businesses while emphasizing organizational and environmental sustainability and corporate social responsibility.

Students can choose from weekend or accelerated options. The weekend option works best for those who need to fit getting their MBA in with a tight work schedule. Classes meet five intensive weekends (Friday through Sunday) per semester, and for one intensive week each summer. The accelerated option (16-month completion) works best for those without 9 to 5 responsibilities.

ANE's Green MBA faculty hail from both the Departments of Organization & Management and Environmental Studies, and also include outside experts. They practice what they preach, not only at the graduate school, but through their work in organizations across the globe. These mentors, advisors, and professors share their experiences as leaders, activists, scientists, and consultants.
