Peoria, AZ (PRWEB) May 27, 2009 -- BbqCoach.com shares 10 tips to help homeowners save thousands of dollars on their Outdoor Kitchen project. Learn complete information about building an Outdoor Kitchen with the newly released DVD titled, "Outdoor Kitchen Design and Construction." This New 2 hr DVD is America's #1 Instructional video helping homeowners to build their own outdoor kitchens, saving thousands of dollars.

1. Purchase Medium Priced Appliances and Save Thousands.
Outdoor Kitchens that make people say wow are usually ones with beautiful islands finished with granite and stone veneer. Seldom do people pay much notice to the brand name of appliances. In comparison, people notice right away a poorly finished island.

By Saving on the grill and accessories homeowners can put most of their budget towards a beautiful finish of their outdoor kitchen island that makes everyone say wow. Materials like stone veneer, pre-colored acrylic stucco, granite and Travertine counter tops are all excellent choices that look incredible.

2. Building an Outdoor Kitchen With Steel Studs and Cement Board Saves Money.
With Outdoor Kitchen construction the best way to save money is to self- assemble a steel frame and add the cement board. These materials are non-combustible and approved for the construction of outdoor kitchens. For the average person, who does not have experience with steel framing, he or she can buy a do-it-yourself pre-cut frame kit. These mail order frame kits screw together like Ikea furniture. They are designed and engineered to support heavy appliances and bar counter over hangs. A professional frame is the skeleton of your island and a critical component for the over all success of a professional looking outdoor kitchen island. Many people who are not trained in steel framing end up building it incorrectly with angles that are not square and insufficient support for heavy appliances and bar counters. It is highly recommended to use a professional frame kit for the average homeowner or even contractor who does not build islands on a regular basis.

3. Protect Your BBQ Island Frame from Rust.
Galvanized steel framing has a protective coating to fight against rust. But if exposed to pooling water over a long period of time, like from a sprinkler or swimming pool it will rust. To protect against this, installing a composite decking material under the frame called, Trex Board is an excellent idea.

4. Use The Correct Type Of Stucco Like The Pro's.
There are 2 types of Stucco. One type is a dry powder designed for houses that requires a metal lath and scratch coat. This is the wrong type of stucco for islands constructed with cement board. Instead, you want pre-mixed acrylic stucco that is specifically designed for Hardi Backer cement board. After painting on a concrete adhesive you can spray this type of stucco with a hopper gun for professional results like a factory.

5. Design Your Island In Rectangles. Islands designed with all 90 degree angles, rectangles, require less construction experience and labor. For your average homeowner that is not a contractor, this design is best. The less labor required the more time and money saved. Rounded Island require expensive curve track and flexible cement board. The additional cost continues to increase with extra finishing materials like a snowball. Rounded Islands require more construction experience since they are easily made out of alignment and need constant adjustment to maintain level. Play it safe - design in rectangles.

6. Outdoor Kitchen Counter Tops For Less.
The most popular trend in today's outdoor kitchen counter tops is to use concrete, granite or Travertine. Hiring a concrete contractor can cost thousands. To save money visit a building supply center and ask to see their concrete stepping stones. These stepping stones come in beautiful colors and can be added to your counter top in the same way tile is adhered. They built a 6ft island with a concrete stepping stone counter top for only $20.00. For those who opt for granite be aware that it can become very hot in direct sun. But granite does makes every one say wow and the heat can easily be remedied with a few well placed umbrellas.

7. Subcontract Some Of The Work.
Many homeowners do not have time to complete the entire project. Instead they assemble the steel frame kit and add the cement board. This save a few thousand dollars and allows the freedom to put together the island design of their dreams. Remember the old saying, "If you want something done right, do it yourself." Once the island is "ready 2 finish," a mason can be called in to install stone veneer, a tile contractor to install tile counter tops.

Many contractors are not experienced with outdoor kitchen islands constructed of steel studs and cement board. Homeowners are advised to protect themselves by learning the over all construction methods for this project. The best way to do this is to watch an Outdoor Design and Construction DVD video. The best selling DVD video is titled, "Outdoor Kitchen Design and Construction." This 2 hr DVD video shows the correct methods for this highly specialized type of construction and gives pointer on how to check your contractors work.

Always get 3 bids from different sub contractors and ask them questions about how they will perform the work to see if it matches the methods you have learned in the video.

8. Don't Be A Victim Of Shabbey Outdoor Kitchen Construction.
Hiring the wrong contractor can cost you thousands of dollars, says William Gardner, founder of BbqCoach.com. I have had clients who hired contractors to finish the island with stucco who ruined the entire job and had cracks all over within a few days. Others who have built using wood instead of approved non-combustible materials have reported that their entire island went up in flames from hot grease. It is vital you do your homework and protect yourself from people who do not know this type of construction. The best way to not become a victim is to learn everything possible about building an outdoor kitchen. This construction information is not available in books. The best source is to watch a real project on DVD video so you really know what's involved.

9. Pergola or Palapa over your BBQ Island?
Those beautiful palapas, don't they make you feel like you are on vacation some exotic place. But are they really the best choice for a private homes landscape? Palapas some times require a crane to lift them into position and can run around $3500. The thatch can lose its color. Many people who originally wanted a Palapa end up going with a wooden Pergola instead. Pergolas offer a lot more for your money. They can be re-painted to look like new. They allow for plasma tvs, ceiling fans and even stereo speakers. Be practical - get a pergola.

10. Don't Overbuild - Wasting Money
Many times when people learn they can build their own outdoor kitchens for so little money they begin to want to over build. This is a big mistake. Keep your outdoor kitchen proportional with the landscape. It should compliment the house not compete with it. Make a list of the appliances you really need in your outdoor kitchen. Estimate 4 ft for your grill, 2 ft for each item such as: a fridge, side burner, sink. Allow 3 ft for an ice bin with double doors below. Using these ball park measurements will quickly allow you to see how much island space is required.
