Farmingdaly, NY (PRWEB) May 19, 2009 -- On Friday, May 22nd at 12:30 p.m., a B-17 Flying Fortress from World War II will take five members of the Fighting 69th recently returned from active duty, plus members of their families, on a tribute flight that helps launch Memorial Day weekend at the American Airpower Museum at Republic Airport, 1230 New Highway, Farmingdale.
Beth Dellipizzi, a member of the Family Readiness Group of the Division, stated, "We are truly honored that we have been allowed to select several family members of the Fighting 69th to fly a `mission' together and connect with the courage and valor this historic aircraft represents." The flight is being underwritten by Hillside Honda of Massapequa.
The B-17, nicknamed "Yankee Lady" by the Yankee Air Museum, is one of a dozen World War II aircraft that will be participating in the Bethpage Federal Credit Union New York Airshow at Jones Beach this Memorial Day weekend and will be on the ramp of the American Airpower Museum at Republic Airport. Other aircraft that will be ground display prior to their flight include F-18's, a Soviet MIG, the Canadian "Snowbirds" aerobatic team and others.
The object of this mission, and the role of every vintage American aircraft operating out of Republic Airport, is to ensure that Americans understand how the sacrifices made by others have allowed us to celebrate our democracy," stated Republic Airport Director Michael Geiger. "It may be more poignant on Memorial Day weekend to recall these sacrifices but there should not be a day when we do not recall the courage and valor required to defend our freedoms."
