Work Ethic 101 - Mom Teaches Tween Sisters the Secret of Success - Hard Work

People say that kids today don't know the meaning of hard work or the value of a dollar. One Alpharetta mom wanted to help her tween daughters understand just how hard it is to make a living. So, she helped them start their own business.

Alpharetta, GA (PRWEB) May 19, 2009 -- In 2007, Retha Sandler, the mother of tween daughters, Melanie, then age 9, and Lily, age 10, read yet another news article about the discrepancy in salaries between men and women in the workplace. She saw a learning opportunity for her girls. She read the article to them and noted that there were only 15 female CEO's among the Fortune 500 companies, despite the fact that women make up more than 46% of the total U.S. workforce. Retha asked the girls what they thought about these facts.    Melanie responded, "That stinks, Mom!" Lily's take on the issue was "That's not fair." Retha asked her girls what they could do to change things. She then proposed that they start a business of their own, to ensure her daughters would become independent women.

The girls loved the idea and came up with a concept for their company. After many months of late nights raising capital, researching the market and designing their product, the girls finally launched Blamtastic Lip Balm (www.blamtastic.com), a line of natural based lip balms for tween boys and girls, in November of 2008.

Make no mistake. It was a lot of hard work. The girls quickly realized that running a business of their own is a lot more difficult than it looks. They dedicated many weekends to promoting Blamtastic, when they may have rather had sleepovers with their friends. There were also financial sacrifices. It was not easy for them, but their hard work and commitment is paying off.

The response to their product has been so great that the girls are already expanding their line with new flavors and packaging. In six short months since their launch, the girls have been able to get Blamtastic into more than 200 stores and boutiques in the U.S. and Canada. While other kids are using their technology skills to chat with their friends, Lily and Melanie are using their computer skills to market their company. They speak with their customers, negotiate agreements and manage their accounts, as any professional would do.

Last but not least, running Blamtastic has also taught Melanie and Lily that managing finances is vital to Blamtastic's growth. Lily and Melanie's mom feels strongly that the experiment was a success. "Starting their own company has taught my daughters that there are no limits to what they can do with hard work and dedication. They have also inspired numerous others to take the first step and pursue their dreams. Of course I'm happy for their success. But the point of the exercise was to teach them some life lessons and this experiment has really delivered. Lily and Melanie are good, grounded kids with a strong work ethic. What more could a mother hope for?"
