Swine Infection from Cell Phones? Doctors Say Cell Phone Hygiene is as Important as Hand Hygiene in Flu Prevention

Multiple strands of bacteria found on 95% of cell phones in a random test alarm doctors and infectious disease specialists. Modern flu and viral prevention tip: keep cell phones clean and practice good "mobile hygiene". Hollywood Creations of Los Angeles introduces much needed remedy with cell phone wipes.

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) May 12, 2009 -- Flu transmission from a text message? The ubiquity and increase in individual usage of mobile phones has given rise to a new health risk many talkers and texters are unaware of: heavy bacteria accumulation on cell phones. Now Hollywood Creations, based in Los Angeles, announces a new solution to "talking dirty" with Cleen Cell® Wipes.

In a March 2009 study published in the Annals of Clinical Microbiology and Antimicrobials (http://www.ann-clinmicrob.com/content/pdf/1476-0711-8-7.pdf) infectious disease and epidemiology specialists warn mobile phones used by health care workers may be sources of hospital acquired bacterial infections. Doctors recommend regular cleaning of cell phones, placing its importance "near hand hygiene".

In an unscheduled culture test of health care workers' cell phones from a hospital last fall, 95% of the phones were found infected with multiple types of bacteria, including infectious flesh-eating MRSA. Previous studies show (http://www.bad.org.uk/site/1015/default.aspx) (http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/Health/story?id=2273311) this "remarkably undeterred" phenomenon as one British Association of Dermatologists official characterized it, is not limited to hospital employees and is more widespread among all cell phone users.

It makes sense that like any item humans use daily, cell phones accumulate bacteria, oils, makeup, debris, and germs from surfaces in a purse or pocket, or a table top that comes in contact with the device.

Because of heavy use near the face, mouth and ears, health officials warn cell phones become hotbeds of bacteria and prolonged use of an unclean phone can lead to health risks ranging from mild acne and irritation to microbial infections such as staph, meningitis, e-coli, MRSA (Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus), and flu. Imagine resting your face against a door knob for 20 minutes to take a call, several times a day, for six months.

As hygiene awareness gains heightened importance in light of the swine flu outbreak, and mobile usage and applications continue to rise in utility and affordability, cell phone users and those around them are exposed to greater health risks than ever before by using an unclean cell phone.

Now a company in Los Angeles claims to have the solution to this 21st century health risk with cell phone wipes. Cleen Cell® Wet Wipes as they are called, are pre-moistened wipes with disinfectant solution which are safe for compact electronics, among the first of its kind to address this modern problem.

"Mom would say to clean your cell phone," says Nima Sharifi, Esq., CEO and inventor of Cleen Cell® Wipes (www.cleencell.com). He has been researching bacteria on cell phones and mobile usage trends while designing Cleen Cell® with the help of friends in his final year in law school.

"Cleen Cell® takes out the guess work to cleaning cell phones. Our cell phone wipes are safe on compact electronics, effective with disinfectant solution, and convenient. They are the best mobile cleaning solution for mobile devices and lifestyles", says the Company President.

The March 2009 study places the importance of cell phone cleanliness near hand hygiene in hospitals. As mobile communication devices continue to improve in utility, mobile hygiene becomes more paramount not only in industries like health care and food handling, but also for individuals and families.

Because cell phone users spend heavily on their devices, there is a natural reluctance to apply any cleaning method that may damage the screen or electronics of their phone, which leads to increased build up of germs and bacteria due to lack of proper cleaning.

Until now cleaning a cell phone generally meant a swipe on the shirt, an inconvenient microfiber cloth and spray, or laptop cleaners and LCD wipes that are too large for a small cell phone, often soaking a cell phone and resulting in a costly, wasteful, and potentially harmful way to keep a cell phone or smartphone clean regularly.

The company is urging hospitals to add cell phone hygiene to their infectious disease prevention guidelines, and is also targeting food and beverage manufacturers in light of recent salmonella outbreaks. Cleen Cell® Wipes' compact and easy to use design appeal to companies that want employees to clean their cell phones, but not spend too much time doing it, or damage company phones by using an unsafe and in most cases ineffective cleaning solution....or get sick by using no solution at all.

With forecasts (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/04/16/AR2009041602133.html) showing new handset sales expected to fall more than 15% in 2009, consumers more than ever want to preserve the phones they own, but not at the expense of their health, or limiting their use. By using a product like Cleen Cell® Wipes, mobile users can talk, e-mail, set reminders, browse the web, take photos and more as much as they like, where and when they like, without the risk of getting sick or infected literally from a text message.
