The State of Nuclear Issues Presented By HTS Enterprise at the ASQ Energy & Environmental Conference

(PRWEB) October 1, 2004 -- American Society of Quality 31st National Energy & Environmental Conference -- Orlando, FL -- September 13, 2004: HTS Enterprise President, Garry A. Harris, was a featured speaker at the American Society for Quality (ASQ) National Energy and Environmental Conference today. A member of a three-speaker panel entitled, Nuclear Power in the U.S.: The State of the Industry" for the ASQ Energy and Environmental Division session, Mr. Harris, current ANS Georgia Section Chairperson, was joined by Jim Hill, ASQ Nuclear Power Production Committee and Director of Performance Assessment of Nuclear Management Company, and Adrian Heymer, Nuclear Energy Institute, Director of New Plant Development. ASQ is the worlds leading authority on quality since 1946. By making quality a global priority, an organizational imperative, and a personal ethic, ASQ is a professional organization for quality professionals who seeks technology, concepts, or tools to improve themselves and their world.

The speaker panel covered current information and insights on operating license renewal, construction of new plants, long-term waste storage, advantages and challenges in nuclear, and more.    

Presenting advances and issues regarding the nuclear energy industry, Mr. Harris also included Top Ten" Lists for Nuclear Issues, Challenges, and Good News. Among additional topics presented to the audience were nuclear plant efficiency and safety trends, public opinion on nuclear trends and the positive effects the American Nuclear Society has created for public and ANS members. Mr. Harris stressed the need for realism: the public needs to be well informed. In summary, Mr. Harris related how the distinct advantages of nuclear technology are important in our lives including the benefits of environmental quality, excellent safety records, and advantageous economic performance, far exceeding fossil energy.

The ASQ Energy & Environmental conference was attended by approximately two hundred of the nations quality and environmental professionals including representatives from ASQs Energy and Environmental Division and ASQ Design and Construction Division. Issues discussed during the four-day conference included the state of nuclear power industry, environmental challenges and initiatives, hot topics in the Department of Energy (DOE), the need for Quality and Environmental Management Systems, and the future of management systems to name a few. Additional topics included ANSI/ASQ E4-2004 revised QMS standard for environmental programs, understanding OSHAS 18001 and ANSI Z-10, a new approach to Six Sigma.

Mr. Harris, a twenty-five year veteran of the nuclear industry, has consulted to or performed engineering, licensing, quality control and assurance, operations, spent fuel transportation and storage, and plant maintenance activities at nearly 70% of nuclear plant sites in the US. His professional experience spans various positions at Westinghouse Electric, Institute for Nuclear Power Operations and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Recently appointed to two American Nuclear Society (ANS) national committees and Vice Chairman of the ANS Section in Atlanta, Mr. Harris also sits on the Division Council for the American Society for Quality Environmental and Energy Divisions. Mr. Harris was Senior Reactor Operator certified by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and Westinghouse Electric Corporation. He is Chairperson for the Atlanta section of the AABE BEAM (Black Energy Awareness Month) Committee, which is responsible for increasing the awareness of energy related career and technical opportunities among minority youth. Mr. Harris holds a BS in Nuclear Engineering from the University of Virginia, a MS in Technology Management and MS in Quality Assurance and is pursuing efforts to obtain a doctorate in Industrial Engineering.
